New September intake for Firefighter program

Published

Fleming College’s Pre-Service Firefighter program is introducing a new September intake for students applying to the program.

The new intake is in addition to the traditional January start for the one-year certificate program. Students now have the option of starting their academic year earlier, allowing them to graduate and move into the workforce more quickly.

“This program has been designed by emergency service professionals to mentor new people coming into the service. We train people to become professional problem-solvers and to work alongside us,” said program coordinator David Gillespie. “Starting in the fall gives the advantage of preparing for employment, emergency services, and related safety fields earlier.”

The Pre-Service Firefighter program is taught by experienced professional firefighters, dispatchers, and fire prevention officers who cover a variety of subjects including water and trench rescue principles, ventilation, fire attack scenarios, high rise fires, firefighter survival, and forcible entry. Students gain extensive practical experience and hands-on training, built around firefighting experiences and scenarios.

Fleming graduates are employed as firefighters in cities such as Ottawa, Toronto, Peterborough, Whitby, Oshawa, Vaughan, Calgary, Hamilton, and Vancouver. And as fire departments face pressure to expand and hire additional resources for Canada’s growing urban centres (such as firefighters, trainers, fire prevention officers, and communications staff), the demand for qualified individuals is increasing.
