New Intern Program for Fleming Sustainable Building Design

Published

Partnership between EllisDon and Fleming College

A door has opened for new graduates of the Sustainable Building Design and Construction program at Fleming College with the help of EllisDon, a global construction services company.

The new partnership will provide one Fleming College Sustainable Building Design and Construction graduate an internship with EllisDon. The internship opportunity will be offered to a Fleming student looking to complement their education with valuable professional work experience.

“We are very impressed with the quality of Fleming’s Sustainable Building graduates, and their program itself is leading-edge in the field of green building design and construction,” stated Cameron Blair, Manager of Sustainable Building Services (Eastern Canada), EllisDon.  “We look forward to building a strong relationship with Fleming College and their graduates.”

This alliance signifies a major accomplishment at Fleming College. It is a testament to the integrity of Fleming’s Sustainable Building Design and Construction certificate program and their vision for a sustainable community.

After considering several Fleming College graduates, EllisDon selected Margaret McCallum as the successful internship candidate for this year.

“EllisDon is the type of company you want to work for and where you want to build a career,” said Sustainable Building graduate Margaret McCallum. “They offer a supportive and challenging work environment that allows me to grow personally and professionally while bringing large-scale high performance buildings to life.”

Margaret’s role includes assisting with corporate support and guidance to EllisDon area offices, departments, and project teams on green building projects.  She also coordinates environmental stewardship initiatives within the company such as the EllisDon’s Earth Day Challenge, and assists with departmental communications, development of training materials, and analysis of historical data.

The Sustainable Building Design and Construction program at Fleming College is a 20-week, intensive, hands-on program that puts students at the centre of the construction of a full-sized (1200-2000 square foot) and cutting edge sustainable building. The program began in 2005, and is offered once a year. The location of the program changes depending on the location of the building project. Sustainable renovation is expected to become the dominant segment of the construction industry over the next 10-20 years.
