‘Our Favourite Recipes’ Cookbook Now On Sale

Proceeds go to RS McLaughlin Cancer Centre in memory of Fleming faculty member Linda Elias

As part of their first service learning initiative, students in the Health Information Management (HIM) are giving back to the community by publishing ‘Our Favourite Recipes’ cookbook. The cookbook sells for $10 with all proceeds being donated to the RS McLaughlin Cancer Centre in memory of HIM program faculty member Linda Elias.

‘Our Favourite Recipes’ offers a food lover’s collection of tasty recipes submitted by Fleming students, faculty, alumni, and advisory committee members. Helpful hints and tips throughout the pages of the book have been provided by Fleming’s Culinary and Fleming Fitness and Health Promotion program students. The cookbook was fully supported by many staff at Fleming College who offered their services to help complete the ‘Our Favourite Recipes’ project, including printing and graphic design. A key motivator behind the project is Health Information Management Program Coordinator Paula Weisflock.

The recipe book project was launched as a way for students to volunteer their time, on top of their demanding course workload, to support a cause in the community. During the initial stage, HIM volunteers couldn’t decide on a cause. It wasn’t until a strong supporter of the project and a full-time faculty member of the HIM program was diagnosed with terminal cancer that students found a cause. Linda Elias, was touched to learn that the book would be dedicated to her and requested that the proceeds go to RS McLaughlin Cancer Centre – Palliative Care Unit based on the wonderful care she was receiving. Although Linda was able to include some of her own favourite recipes, she passed away prior to the book being finished.

The financial goal for this project is to raise $5,000 through 500 copies at $10 each. With many books sold prior to publication, volunteers for ‘Our Favourite Recipes’ hope to sell many more to those looking for holiday gift ideas and to those in need of a good cookbook in their kitchen.
