Health Information Management Program Granted CHIMA Recognition

Published

The Health Information Management (HIM) program at Fleming College has been granted full program recognition status, without reporting requirements, for the next six years by the Canadian Health Information Managements Association (CHIMA). Re-recognition was received following the formal review of documentation and a two-day site visit to Fleming, a new component of the recognition process.

“We are thrilled to receive full CHIMA approval,” stated Fleming’s HIM Program Coordinator Paula Weisflock. “CHIMA recognition status affirms that Fleming offers a dynamic and professional HIM program, one that advances the Health Information Management field.”

The HIM program at Fleming College prepares students to meet national standards and help them to enter the HIM practice as certified professionals. Graduates of CHIMA recognized programs are eligible to take the Canadian College of Health Information Management (CCHIM) national certification examination (NCE) which assures competent entry-level skills of HIM professionals for jobs across Canada.

Fleming is one of three Ontario colleges recognized by the Canadian Health Information Management Association.

CHIMA is the national organization that represents leadership and excellence in health information management. CHIMA evaluates formal educational programs for their suitability to prepare students to meet national standards and become eligible to enter HIM practice as certified professionals. CHIMA represents more than 3,700 certified Health Information Management professionals in addition to 1,300 affiliate, student and retired members.

Fleming’s Health Information Management program is a challenging two-year diploma program. Students will learn to use computer technologies to capture and analyze data and to create health information for healthcare delivery use along with financial and management planning. Graduates will be qualified for employment in a variety of health service settings and can choose the area that most interests them, including hospitals, primary care, chronic and long-term care facilities, community healthcare, mental health agencies, rehabilitation services, private clinics, health information networks, insurance and pharmaceutical industries, and government agencies and services.
