Hands-on learning highlighted at Fleming’s Fall Open House

Published

Fleming College is opening its doors to prospective students at its annual Fall Open House taking place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21.

Deciding on a post-secondary institution to attend and which program to take can be intimidating for prospective students. Events such as Open House allow students to explore Fleming’s campuses in Peterborough, Lindsay, and Haliburton, and talk to faculty and students about program choices. Beyond academics, visitors can learn more about financial assistance, housing, learning supports, health services, meal plans, and student life.

Faculty and students will host program demonstrations at Open House. These are fully interactive, allowing visitors to see what Fleming students experience in a hands-on learning environment, and will include:

  • Sutherland Campus: the Skills for Justice Scenario Lab will be open (features crime scene set-ups), the Firefighter program’s fire truck will be parked at the front entrance, and Culinary students will be cooking up treats in the kitchen lab.
  • Frost Campus: Arboriculture students will be showing off their tree climbing skills, and Blasting Techniques students will be performing blasting demonstrations every hour on the hour.
  • Haliburton Campus: Visitors can interact with students during live demonstrations as they work in the studios.

Despite its smaller size, Fleming College is a leader in delivering programs that offer a winter intake – the college has more than 50 full-time programs that start in January. Open House provides an opportunity for students considering these programs to visit the campus and learn more about life at Fleming.

Students who start in January study through the summer and start third semester with the fall cohort. This compressed learning pathway allows students to finish their program more quickly. More than 1,000 students started their first semester at Fleming in January 2015.

Prospective students can enter Fleming’s Cash for College contest at flemingcollege.ca/enter$5k/. The winner will receive $5,000 cash to help cover school costs. This contest is open to first time students attending Fleming College in 2016.
