Fleming College to sign Indigenous Education Protocol

Published

The College’s Board of Governors and Aboriginal Education Council have endorsed Fleming’s signing of Colleges and Institutes Canada’s Indigenous Education Protocol. Signing this Protocol will be a significant step forward for Fleming and will reaffirm the importance of Indigenous education at the College.

Fleming College has a long history of supporting our Aboriginal learners. We have relied on our Aboriginal Education Council (an advisory committee made up of local Aboriginal leaders) for over two decades. Both our Indigenous curriculum and support services have continued to grow.

The Indigenous Education Protocol is made up of seven principles:

  • Commit to making Indigenous education a priority.
  • Ensure governance structures recognize and respect Indigenous peoples.
  • Implement intellectual and cultural traditions of Indigenous peoples through curriculum and learning approaches relevant to learners and communities.
  • Support students and employees to increase understanding and reciprocity among Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.
  • Commit to increasing the number of Indigenous employees with ongoing appointments throughout the institution, including Indigenous senior administrators.
  • Establish Indigenous-centred holistic services and learning environments for learner success.
  • Build relationships and be accountable to Indigenous communities in support of self-determination through education, training and applied research.

The Protocol is being signed by colleges across Canada as part of Colleges and Institutes Canada’s focus on Indigenous learners. Colleges and institutes are key providers of applied postsecondary education for Indigenous communities. These postsecondary institutions respect and recognize that Indigenous people – First Nation, Métis and Inuit – have distinct cultures, languages, histories, and contemporary perspectives. Fleming College recognizes that Indigenous education emanates from the intellectual and cultural traditions and distinct languages of Indigenous peoples in Canada.

We look forward to the signing of this Protocol and focusing further on the attributes that it strives for. We recognize that not only will our Aboriginal students benefit from this work, but so too will our entire Fleming community. We invite all staff and students to help us celebrate this important occasion by attending the signing ceremony at the Sutherland Campus on Monday, December. 7, 2015.
