NMA receives funding for new manufacturing-specific training

Published

Northumberland, ON – (October 5, 2016) – The Northumberland Manufacturers’ Association (NMA) submission to the Canada-Ontario Job Grant: Upskill Call for Proposal to deliver a Northumberland manufacturing sector specific training program was approved by the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development (MAESD).

The approval provides the NMA with two-thirds funding to a maximum of $54,000 to support local manufacturers’ participation in a pilot training program.

The proposed training was developed in partnership with Fleming College in consultation with local manufacturers to fill a skills gap identified by NMA member manufacturers. The pilot “Continuous Improvement Leadership” training includes essential and technical skills, creative problem solving, innovative thinking skills and leadership skills to prepare entry and intermediate level employees for future advancement.

The training will be delivered by Fleming College at its Cobourg Campus and will include a certificate of recognition. With a start date of November 17, 2016, the training includes seventeen half-day sessions, personal coaching and an applied project for each participant that is anticipated to have an immediate value to participating manufacturers.

Local manufacturers can contact the NMA office at 905-372-8315 ext. 241 to register their employees and to apply for the funding support.

Dan Ross, NMA President, stated: “The NMA is very pleased the Ministry approved our submission to deliver the pilot training program. The program addresses a manufacturing skills gap identified by our Northumberland manufacturers. We are equally pleased that Fleming College worked with the NMA to develop the training and will be delivering it for us as a certificate program at the Cobourg campus.”

Ross added, “The NMA is working very hard to bring forward new programs that will assist member manufacturers to strengthen their operations, and global competitiveness through initiatives such as this pilot training program.”

Fleming College President Tony Tilly stated: “To achieve success in a highly competitive world, training and development are part of the equation. The NMA and its members are investing in competitive advantage and they are supported by this much appreciated provincial funding. Fleming College is equally committed to this partnership for training, innovation and success.”

MPP Lou Rinaldi stated: “As a government we recognize how important it is to fund pilot projects like this to provide critical skill set development. Both employers and employees are looking for new opportunities to enhance and develop a variety of innovative training initiatives like this one being undertaken by the Northumberland Manufacturing Association in conjunction with Fleming College. I commend both the NMA and Fleming College for taking on this exiting venture.”

“The Canada-Ontario Job Grant Upskills program was designed to close skills gaps like these,” said Deb Matthews, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Development. “I’m thrilled that the Northumberland Manufacturers Association is working with Fleming College. This partnership will help build up Ontario’s highly skilled workforce and ensure that Ontarians have the skills required to fill the jobs of today and tomorrow.”

About the NMA
The Northumberland Manufacturers’ Association (NMA) incorporated in 2004 and has been actively representing over 212 manufacturers in Northumberland County for over ten years. The purpose of the NMA is to promote continuous improvement, innovation, high performance and productivity enhancements through collaboration, education and advocacy.

The NMA works to achieve its goals through strategic partnerships with Quinte and Kawartha manufacturers’ associations, government, and stakeholders such as the Northumberland CFDC, and local economic development offices, universities, colleges and training centres.

The NMA strives to deliver value added programs such as workshops, Strategic Focus Groups and a Member Benefits Program. The NMA leads an annual Regional Manufacturing Conference on behalf of our Tri-Association partners, Quinte and Kawartha manufacturers. The historically sold out annual November conference provides high quality, valuable training and timely information locally, negating the need for travel to larger city centres .
