Certificate in Manufacturing Operations offered on-site at Weetabix

Fleming College has partnered with Weetabix of Canada Ltd. to offer a customized, on-site training program designed to improve the technical skills of selected employees at the company.

The Fleming College Certificate in Manufacturing Operations will be delivered in two phases over a one-year period. The first phase covers manufacturing processes and includes statutory regulations, manufacturing operations, packaged products and inspection and quality in a manufacturing environment. The second phase focuses on effective teamwork and an efficient workplace including training in root cause analysis, waste management, downtime analysis and performance improvement.

Ronnie Buttar, Plant Manager, is committed to developing his employees to their fullest potential.

“Developing a competitive and highly skilled workforce is crucial,” he said.  “This training will ensure that our employees have the necessary skills to ensure our company is a continuous learning and highly adaptive organization.”

“Fleming College is uniquely suited to deliver this program. We have a history of successful business programs both at the college and contract-training level. The college’s adult-learner focus and ability to tailor curriculum to suit the needs of both full-time students and contract clients sets us apart,” said Jim Drennan, Dean of Justice and Business Studies.

“This new program offers an opportunity for adult learners employed in our community to advance their hands-on skills and enhance their personal development,” said Deborah Clifford, Manager of the Cobourg Campus. “As well, these skills bring added value to the workforce and assist businesses in advancing employees from within the company.”

Phase one of the program is already underway. The first cohort of seventeen employees attended the orientation training in December 2012.  Weetabix is hoping to have about 30 employees participate. Training will take place primarily on-site at Weetabix’s Cobourg location during normal work shifts. Tara McDonough, the Fleming trainer brings extensive experience in manufacturing, coaching and training as well as adult education.

This partnership has been created with support from the Government of Canada Eastern Ontario Development Program through the Northumberland Community Futures Development Corporation.

Located in the heart of Central Ontario, Fleming College has campus locations in Peterborough, Lindsay, Cobourg and Haliburton. Named for famous Canadian inventor and engineer Sir Sandford Fleming, the college features more than 90 full-time programs in Community Development and Health, Continuing Education, Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences, Justice and Business, Skilled Trades and Technology, General Arts and Science, and Visual Arts. Fleming College has more than 5,900 full-time and 10,000 part-time students, and 63,000 alumni.
