Responsive design: new intranet web framework implemented

Published

Fleming College has implemented a new responsive design framework into its myCampus Intranet.

myCampus is a secured, authenticated internal service that grants students, staff and faculty access to their data as well as single-sign on functionality to all information technology services.

Students and staff are increasingly using mobile devices to log on and learn. Employing responsive design for myCampus ensures the college community can access information such as timetables, the academic calendar, and college updates quickly and easily from any device, whether it’s a personal computer, laptop, smart phone or tablet.

According to Fleming College Information Technology Services, the use of responsive design for an internal portal is fairly unique among postsecondary institutions.

A relatively new technique, student information is pulled out of the Student Information System (SIS) and presented in a mobile-friendly fashion without the user having to download an application for their device to do so. All live data, such as timetables and unofficial grades are pulled directly from the SIS system.

“These changes help ensure students have the resources on hand all the time – no matter if they are sitting at home in front of their computer, in a coffee shop in front of their laptop, sitting on a park bench with their tablet, or walking in remote locations of the world with a mobile device,” says Julien Feyen, Enterprise Portal Administrator.

Overall, the service will improve the experience of students and will ensure students have access to all the resources they require, no matter what the medium of delivery.

Fleming uses Bootstrap, which is open source, to implement responsive design. It was originally developed at Twitter as a framework to encourage consistency across internal systems. Bootstrap is compatible with all major browsers and automatically adjusts the graphic design of web pages to account for the characteristics of the device being used.
