Groombridge Way (1)

Fleming College is posthumously honouring longtime volunteer and former Board Chair Les Groombridge.

Fleming has officially renamed the Sutherland Campus roadway Farmhouse Lane to Groombridge Way in his honour. The renaming was approved by the college’s Board of Governors in January.

“Les Groombridge’s three decades of dedicated service to Fleming continue to leave a lasting impact on the college community,” said Fleming College President Tony Tilly. “We wanted to ensure his legacy is remembered and honoured on campus for many years to come.”

Mr. Groombridge, who passed away in 2011, was a lifelong resident of Peterborough. Beginning in 1975, Mr. Groombridge served as a member of Fleming’s Sports, Recreation and Tourism Program Advisory Committee. He was later appointed to the college’s Board of Governors and served a total of two terms (six years) from January 1980 to December 1985.

As a Governor, Mr. Groombridge served as both Vice-Chair and Board Chair. Further to that, in 1994, he was appointed to the Ontario Council of Regents, the governing body of the province’s colleges of applied arts and technology.

To honour Mr. Groombridge’s contributions to the Council, Colleges Ontario (formerly the Association of Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology of Ontario) presented him with its Community Volunteer Award in 2003.

Away from his volunteer work with the college, Mr. Groombridge served as president of Outboard Marine Corporation. After retiring from this position, he went on to serve as the City of Peterborough’s Planning and Economic Development Director from 1987 to 1992. He also played a key role in the establishment of the Canadian Canoe Museum.

The new roadway signs were installed today at the campus.
