Fair trade at Fleming College

Published

Peterborough ON – (November 16, 2010) – Fleming College invites staff and students and the community to attend the 4th Annual Fair Trade Sale with Ten Thousand Villages from Wednesday, Nov. 24 to Friday, Nov. 26 at both its Sutherland and Frost campuses.

This holiday sale of unique, handcrafted gifts – including fair trade coffee and tea, jewellery, holiday decorations, home décor, toys, and textiles – is an opportunity for the local community to come out and support fair trade.

Ten Thousand Villages is an organization which sells handicrafts from “developing” countries through its network of stores in Canada and the USA, as well as hundreds of annual Festival sales.

All proceeds from the Fleming sale are returned to Ten Thousand Villages to help improve the quality of life for people in Latin America, Africa and Asia. The theme this year is “Ten Thousand Dollars for Ten Thousand Villages”, as Fleming students aim to beat the $9,000 in sales in 2008.  Come out and support them as they put global citizenship into action.

A program of Mennonite Central Committee, a relief and development organization working in more than 50 countries around the world, Ten Thousand Villages is a non-profit Fair Trade Organization (FTO).  FTOs are non-governmental organizations designed to benefit artisans, not to maximize profits. They market products from handicraft and agricultural organizations based in developing countries, providing consumers with products that have been fairly purchased from sustainable sources.
