Build your skills for free with Fleming College

Peterborough ON – (March 24, 2022) – Fleming College is helping to address gaps in both the skilled trade labour shortage and the region’s high unemployment numbers by offering underemployed or unemployed workers free training through the SkillsAdvance Ontario Construction program.

The program is an intensive, four-week training course for those working or looking to work in the construction industry or boost their skillset by taking courses in health and safety training, gain essential business skills and hands-on technical skills training.

“There’s no question that skilled workers are needed in all areas,” said Fleming College President Maureen Adamson. “This program helps address the gap and gives job seekers and aspiring construction workers struggling with employment a chance to gain valuable training, work experience and employment support, at absolutely no cost to them.”

For those who can’t attend classes on a consistent basis, Fleming College is offering the course as a hybrid model. Workers can enrol in a combined virtual/in-person class model which would allow them to attend classes in Peterborough less frequently, pursuing most of their training online.

Construction training covers everything from framing walls, handling and using construction and power tools and materials to installing siding and removing shingles.

Based on consultation with employers, the program also includes construction-specific  workplace safety training and first-aid. In addition to skills training, participants receive  support in gaining employment through one-on-one meetings, performance reviews, job search skill and assistance in transitioning to employment.

There is no cost to those who qualify for the program and spaces are still available for several start dates.

The SkillsAdvance Ontario Construction program is offered by the Eastern Ontario Colleges Consortium, which includes Fleming, Algonquin, St. Lawrence, La Cite and Loyalist Colleges.
