Program Overview

This nursing specialty for RNs gives you the skills to become a part of the surgical team in scrub or circulating roles, working with surgeons and anesthesiologists. You will also receive an introduction to interventional radiology techniques and anesthesia best practice. The program includes as evidenced based theory, extensive lab practice in Fleming’s the state-of-the art simulation and nursing labs as well as Peterborough Regional Health Centre’s Operating Rooms and a clinical field experience.

This Ontario College Graduate Certificate has been designed in accordance with the Standards of Practice of the College of Nurses of Ontario, and in alignment with the guidelines and Standards of Practice of the Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada (ORNAC).

There is no cost to participants.

Format

This full-time program is delivered in a hybrid format, with synchronous and asynchronous lab preparations delivered online for 10 weeks. During these 10 weeks there will also be intensive labs on three weekends (Saturday and Sunday, 8 am – 5 pm) at the Sutherland Campus in Peterborough and at the Operating Room of the Peterborough Regional Health Centre.

This theory and practical training will be followed by a 4-week clinical experience in the Operating Room. Students outside of the Peterborough area may be able to participate in the clinical experience at a local health care facility.

Admission Requirements

BScN Degree, Registered Nurse (RN) in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.

Participants also must be:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Residents of Ontario

Focus on perioperative nursing principles, techniques, and anatomical assessment skills as they apply to clients undergoing various surgeries i.e. minor, general, and specialized with opportunities for simulated practice. Examine the nursing process with more specialized and complex perioperative nursing situations including initial recovery of the anesthetized client. Explore how cultural values, beliefs and practices influence the perioperative nursing role. Focus on perioperative nursing principles, techniques, and anatomical assessment skills as they apply to clients undergoing various surgeries i.e. minor, general, and specialized with opportunities for simulated practice. Examine the nursing process with more specialized and complex perioperative nursing situations including initial recovery of the anesthetized client. Explore how cultural values, beliefs and practices influence the perioperative nursing role.

SAO Perioperative Nursing is funded by the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development. This program is offered by the Eastern Ontario Colleges Consortium / Consortium des Collèges de l’Est de l’Ontario, which was created to deliver this SkillsAdvance Ontario project in Eastern Ontario. The consortium is made up of Algonquin, Fleming, St. Lawrence, La Cite and Loyalist Colleges.
