SkillsAdvance Ontario (SAO) – Personal Support Worker – Accelerated
The next intake of the FREE SAO PSW-Accelerated program starts February 14, 2022.

Take 12 weeks of coursework followed by a 12-week unpaid placement and graduate in just 6 months to a rewarding career as Personal Support Worker. You'll benefit from the excellent reputation Fleming's program has within the healthcare industry.
There is currently a high demand for Personal Support Workers in Ontario's health and long-term care sector. The SAO Personal Support Worker - Accelerated program allows you to graduate with full PSW credentials in just 6 months. Tuition for this program is fully funded.
Start with 400 hours of relevant theory through online learning and an in-person lab component in our innovative new lab facilities at the Sutherland Campus in Peterborough. There may be funding to cover travel and lodging expenses for eligible applicants who do not live within commuting distance of the Sutherland Campus. In the final 3 months you will gain practical experience with an unpaid clinical placement, which can take place at a healthcare facility near you.
NOTE: The clinical placement agency will request that you submit a current police records check, including vulnerable sector. Applicants who have been convicted of an offense under the criminal code for which they have not been pardoned may be denied the opportunity to enter clinical placement.
You will graduate with the knowledge and skills to work in a variety of work settings:
- long-term care facilities
- group homes
- community agencies
- day care centres (children or adults)
- home care agencies
TUITION AND OTHER EXPENSES
Tuition, books and lab kits for this program are free for qualified applicants. You will be required to purchase a uniform for your placement.
This SkillsAdvance Ontario (SAO) program is open to high school graduates, early school leavers, unemployed, and underemployed youth and adults. EI eligible and non-EI eligible, women, Indigenous peoples and newcomers to Canada are encouraged to apply.
Participants must be:
- 18 years of age or older
- Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident
- Residents of Ontario
- Currently unemployed or under-employed (less than 20/hrs a week);
- Not currently in education or training
IMPORTANT: Vaccine Policy in effect. Everyone, including students, staff, faculty and visitors, will be required to be fully vaccinated in order to access the programs and activities on Fleming campuses.
This program has the following non-academic admission requirements.
- Standard First Aid (within 3 years)*
- CPR Level C (annually as required)*
- Mask Fit (every 2 years as required)*
- NVCI (every 2 years as required) – currently not mandatory*
- Immunization forms
- Vulnerable Sector Check within 6 months
- TB Annual Test (as required)
- Flu Shot (fall and winter terms)
- WSIB Student Letter signed
- COVID-19 Informed Student Consent Form
* These can be completed at no additional cost at Fleming College prior to your placement.
SAO PSW - Accelerated is funded by the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development. This program is offered by the Eastern Ontario Colleges Consortium / Consortium des Collèges de l’Est de l’Ontario, which was created to deliver this SkillsAdvance Ontario project in Eastern Ontario. The consortium is made up of Algonquin, Fleming, St. Lawrence, La Cite and Loyalist Colleges.
