Do you dream of traveling the world? Are you looking at beginning a career in one of the world’s fastest growing industries? The tourism sector in Canada is currently a $90 billion industry employing almost 1.8 million people (Source: Tourism HR Canada). If you are a people person and have a passion for discovering what the world has to offer, this program is for you.

The Tourism program combines practical hands-on experiences with class lectures. Students learn the key elements of the travel business through courses such as: Discovering Destinations, Tour Operations, Tourism Trends, Marketing, Travel Reservations, Digital Media, Adventure & Ecotourism and Hospitality Sales & Service, plus electives in business and general education courses. You will have the opportunity to meet industry leaders through events, program field trips and guest lecturers. You can also join other School of Business and Information Technology students on an international learning experience to get a first-hand look at various tourism destinations. The 200 hour field placement provides practical knowledge, career opportunities and connections in the industry.

The program provides the leadership and practical skills needed to work for tour operators, destination marketing organizations, travel agencies, cruise lines, hotels, resorts, or tourism and travel service providers. Complete a second business or hospitality diploma in one year, or continue your formal education with our partner universities in Canada, Australia, Ireland or Scotland.

* Students starting in January are required to attend classes over the summer semester.

Fleming’s Tourism - Global Travel program offers field trips to a variety of tourist attractions and business, allowing students to get an up-close look at the industry they are preparing to enter. Our industry-experienced faculty come from a diverse background of tourism industry fields and are eager to share their real-life experiences with our students.

My time at Fleming College allowed me to truly feel confident and more comfortable in myself. The hands-on experience gained through multiple projects allowed me to grow into the leader I am today. A year after graduating, I moved to British Columbia and started working at Copper Point Resort. I started as a Guest Services Agent at the front desk, within six months I was the supervisor and within another six months I became the Assistant Front Office Manager, which is where I am at today. Without my experience at Fleming, I would have never come out of my shell and be where I am today. Thanks Fleming!

Emily Carver, 2016 Program Graduate

Deciding to take the Tourism and Travel program at Fleming College was the best decision I could have made toward my professional future. Its well-rounded course load provided me with the skills to enter into any area of the Hospitality and Tourism industry that interested me. I was surprised at the number and variety of jobs that this program prepared me for. The placement that I completed for the program led to a summer job and now permanent full-time employment in a position that I love with a Destination Marketing Organization.

Emily Clarey, 2014 Program Graduate

My experience at Fleming College was great! The instructors in the Tourism - Global Travel program have a love of the industry and want to see their students thrive. Since graduating in 2017, I have worked at a transportation company, a local resort, and am now a travel consultant at Flight Centre. The knowledge and skills I gained in the Tourism program have been useful in each position. Each course plays a part in setting students up for success in their chosen career path. Thanks for everything!

Meghan White,2017 Program Graduate

The Tourism and Travel Fast Track program provided me with exceptional hands-on experience to compliment my university degree. The program opened my eyes to the vast opportunities in the Tourism and Hospitality field and ultimately landed me the career of my dreams with a destination marketing organization.

Jaimie Judge, 2013 Program Graduate

You have the opportunity to travel on a field trip and volunteer on projects with local people, experience and understand why people travel to resort destinations. You are also required to solicit and complete a minimum of 200 hours of field placement, to practice the theories and skills studied in class. It is recommended that students complete 100 hours between semester two and three and the remainder before graduating. This gives you the opportunity to network and meet potential employers.

Industry careers include:

  • Tour escort
  • Travel counsellor
  • Tourism marketing manager
  • Meetings/special events co-ordinator
  • Tour operator/reservationist
  • Hotel front desk associate
  • Cruise line/resort activities director
  • Visitor information counsellor

You'll find work with (for example):

  • tour wholesalers
  • airlines
  • travel agencies
  • destination marketing organizations
  • cruise lines
  • hotels
  • government tourism organizations

Employers include (for example):

  • GTS - Lufthansa Airlines
  • Carlson-Wagonlit Travel
  • Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines
  • Fairmont Hotels & Resorts
  • Air Canada
  • Westjet
  • Sunwing Vacations

You'll spend approximately $1,000 per year for books and supplies. In semester three, if you register for the Travel-based Learning course (INTL10) there will be an additional cost.

Your program has one non-academic mandatory requirement. All students enrolled in the Tourism: Global Travel Program (commencing September 2020 or later) are required to obtain their TICO Certification (Travel Counsellor) prior to the end of their second semester. TICO Certification is necessary to work in certain fields of the tourism industry. The certification involves a self-directed study of the TICO course materials (free downloadable study guide), followed by an on-line exam. Students are responsible for the exam fee (as of 2020 approximately $35). Your program coordinator will supply further information about this process in your first semester of the program. Failure to complete or supply the appropriate documentation for this certification will result in denial of entry into TOUR58 - Reservation Systems, in your third semester.
