The demand for Respiratory Therapists will continue to grow as Ontario - population increases and ages. This program will prepare you with knowledge, skills, and clinical judgement to deliver optimal cardio-respiratory care to diverse patients and clients in a range of practice settings including acute care and community environments. You will be part of the inter-professional healthcare team dedicated to cardio-respiratory health and well-being.
The highly interactive and practical program will train you to assess, plan, implement and evaluate safe, therapeutic cardio-respiratory interventions. You will discover how to establish therapeutic relationships and communicate in a culturally sensitive manner with patients and their families.
Your learning environment will include interdisciplinary lab spaces, our state-of-the-art simulation centre with high tech/high touch technologies and specialized equipment to prepare you for a rewarding career. In the last two semesters you will complete two field placements of 420 hours each to give you the experience you need to graduate job-ready.
This new program is undergoing accreditation with Accreditation Canada enabling the graduates to write the Health Professionals Testing Canada (HPTC) exam to become members the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario (CRTO).

Respiratory therapists have career opportunities to work independently and collaboratively with a range of health professionals in a variety of practice settings, such as
- hospitals,
- long-term care,
- home care,
- family health teams,
- hyperbaric clinics,
- diagnostic
- sleep clinics
Graduates may also find employment opportunities within private businesses or in independent practice requiring specific cardiorespiratory knowledge and skills. Employment earnings for respiratory therapists are high in Ontario with an average of more than $75K in.
If you are 19 years of age or older before classes start, and you do not possess an OSSD, you can write the Skillsmarker to assess your eligibility for admission. Additional testing or academic upgrading may be necessary to meet specific course requirements for this program.

Failure to provide any of the required Non Academic Field Requirements by the specified due date will result in an inability to participate in the mandatory placement components of the program.
Requirements for Clinical Placement:
You may be assigned to a clinical placement spot anywhere in the province of Ontario. Additional costs may be incurred during clinical placement including (but not limited to): housing, parking, security deposit for identification badges.
Like most jobs in the healthcare profession, respiratory therapists need to have a unique skill set that allows them to multitask while remaining hyper-focused on the needs and conditions of their patients. All respiratory therapists should have the following skills:
- Excellent verbal communication skills
- Confident, self-motivated with a willingness to learn
- Calm bedside manner
- Compassion
- Comprehensive understanding of infection control principles
- Ability to work with a medical team as well as independently
- Good judgment, problem solving, and quick decision-making ability
- Time management skills
- Physiological, math and science knowledge
- Patience and ability to teach and educate patients
- Ability to deal and cope with stressful situations
- Detail oriented
Curriculum and assessment of competencies for the Fleming Respiratory Therapy program is based on the National Competency Framework (NCF) for the profession of Respiratory Therapy. The NCF is a list of competencies (knowledge, skills, abilities and judgment) considered essential for entering the practice of Respiratory Therapy in Ontario. To practise as a Respiratory Therapist in Ontario, you must be registered with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario (CRTO). To become a member of the CRTO, graduates from Fleming’s Respiratory Therapy program must complete certain mandatory requirements, including passing the Health Professionals Testing Canada (HTPC) examination and the Launch RT Jurisprudence Assessment.

Once you are a CRTO member, you must complete mandatory ongoing professional development to maintain your license. Please refer to Professional Development - CRTO for more information.
- Plan on $1,500 per year for books, supplies and materials
- Supplies and materials may include purchase of a stethoscope, gloves, and any additional required PPE for lab simulation exercises
- Additional costs may also be incurred for Non Academic requirements
- Provide cardio-respiratory care in compliance with relevant legislation, professional standards, codes of ethics and practice setting policies and procedures.
- Use preventive measures that contribute to a culture of patient and employee health and safety within a range of practice settings.
- Establish and maintain therapeutic relationships and communicate in a culturally sensitive manner with diverse patients/clients and their families to support cardio-respiratory health.
- Collaborate with patients/clients and members of the inter-professional health care team to optimize cardio-respiratory health and well-being.
- Assess and interpret relevant diagnostic and patient information when treating patients/clients who are experiencing a range of cardio-respiratory conditions.
- Develop patient's/client's plan of care in collaboration with patients/clients and health care team members by identifying priorities, establishing goals and determining interventions to support optimal cardio-respiratory outcomes.
- Select, implement, evaluate and modify therapeutic cardio-respiratory interventions to provide evidence-based, patient-centered care in a range of practice settings.
- Develop, implement and evaluate cardio-respiratory related learning plans in collaboration with patients/clients, families and health care team members to support client independence and self-management.
- Complete written and electronic documentation of patient/client care to meet legal, organizational and professional requirements.
- Read, interpret and participate in research and use relevant evidence-based findings to inform and guide respiratory therapy practice.
- Engage in reflective practice and ongoing professional development activities to maintain and enhance competence in the field of respiratory therapy.
Students applying to Respiratory Therapy must meet the following requirements:
- OSSD including Gr 12 (C) English, Gr 12 (C) Math, Gr 11 or 12 Physics , in addition 2 Gr 11 or Gr 12 (C) Sciences, one of which must be Biology. Minimum final grade of 65% in each required course.
Transfer Agreements
