This three-semester, graduate certificate program focuses on the creation, management, and analysis of spatial and non-spatial data through the design of visualizations and maps. You will integrate and manage data with spatial information. You will also learn to provide effective and interactive ways to share that information with stakeholders and feed it into data analysis processes.

Offered in a ‘Hy Flex’ delivery format, you can choose to attend in-person or online. There is no requirement to commit to one or the other – you can move between the options throughout the semester.

Building on Fleming’s history and reputation as a leader in geomatics and geographic information systems education, this is the only analytics program in Ontario specializing in GIS.

This program shares curriculum with our Spatial Data Analytics program providing an opportunity to gain credentials in both fields, increasing your employability.

With its unique delivery format, the program is accessible to both full-time and part-time learners.

GIS for Analytics will feature a capstone applied project in semester three, in which students will work with community partners to design, develop, and implement a GIS project for industry. This allows you to put theory into practice, employing the skills you have learned within the program to find solutions to a real-world problem.

  • Input, store, manipulate and retrieve spatial data in a computer-based environment using the general concepts of spatial information and current methodologies
  • Design and implement data models, algorithms, and programs to efficiently store and manage spatial data
  • Apply common data management techniques to enhance, combine and cleanse data sets and document the process and results
  • Design and present spatial and non-spatial data visualizations to communicate information to a variety of potential end users taking into consideration effective practices
  • Assess user requirements using spatial data to suggest solutions to industry problems
  • Create, manage, and manipulate a variety of sources and types of spatial and attribute data, reflecting how each best models the physical world
  • Adhere to confidential, ethical, legal, and professional standards of practice when performing tasks and responsibilities
  • Collaborate with others in a team environment to support evidence-based decision making

Students applying to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for Analytics must meet the following requirements:

  • Ontario College Diploma, Ontario College Advanced Diploma, Degree or equivalent. It is further recommended that students have basic experience with GIS. Introductory programming in Python or JavaScript and experience with technical or professional writing is also highly recommended.
