Outdoor Adventure Certifications and Training

OAS/ODE - First Year - Technical Certifications

Certification is a verification process. Certifications commonly have a certifying body that sets criteria for acceptable standards and it is up to the service provider to meet and test for those standards before granting the certification.

Bronze Medallion/Bronze Cross Lifesaving Society National- contact Lifesaving Society in each province to transfer Adult swim screening for competency. Standard First Aid and CPR C 40 hours for combined course Lindsay Recreation Complex pool staff/ On campus over several weeks.

Assistant High Ropes Instructor ACCT-Association of Challenge Course Technology Internationally none 24 hours AdventureWorks!: Entry level certification teaches the technical, facilitation, and safety management skills required to lead high ropes programs.
Canoe Tripping Level 3 ORCKA Ontario and several other provinces Canoe Tripping Level 2, Moving water Level 1A, Canadian Style Paddling Level 1, 500 km of paddling, 25 nights out, at least 1 trip of 5+days 14 hours + 3 day canoe trip Carry on Paddling/ Canadian Style Paddling 1 course can be built into the course for those needing that certification to qualify- delivered early spring before graduation
Wilderness First Responder - Bridge Course (WAFA to WFR) WMA International Bridged from WAFA in year 1 40 hours Wilderness Medical Associates: delivered on campus- focusing on advanced first aid in remote settings; an industry standard for lead guide roles.

**Students are given the option to pay for additional certifications beyond their first choice.


OAS/ODE - First Year - Trainings

Trainings introduce the skills and knowledge required to effectively and safely participate in outdoor adventure activities and to begin to understand how to effectively lead programs. Aside from the certifications, trainings make up the bulk of the field-based learning opportunities. In the Outdoor Adventure programs, several training opportunities are provided that give students exposure to a range of skills and programs available in the outdoor adventure industry.
