Ecosystem Management Technician Monitoring and Assessment

Jennings Creek field trip (Students in the field)

Barb Elliot, Professor of the Aquatic Ecosystems course, takes her 3rd semester students to Jennings Creek in the north end of Lindsay to do some invertebrate collecting!

This involves getting into chestwaders and spending some time in the stream shuffling about to dislodge the critters from their homes in the bottom sediment.

These invertebrates are collected and identified and used to calculate an index of water quality. Some students go on to do this type of work after graduation! Angela Barrett, grad 2000, just started a "Bug Watch" program using the Kick and Sweep protocol in her position as Project Coordinator of the Frenchman's Bay Watershed Rehabilitation Project with the Toronto Region Conservation Authority!
