Women in Trees: Conference and Awareness day at Frost Campus

Published

Come climb trees like a girl at the upcoming Women in Trees Conference and Awareness Day at Fleming College’s Frost Campus on Saturday, April 23.

This free event will showcase the variety of roles and opportunities for women in the fields of urban forestry, forestry and arboriculture.

A panel of female industry representatives will speak about their experiences and pathways to fulfilling careers with trees. The day will be filled with networking opportunities, story-telling, and will culminate with the Women in Trees group climb. The goal is to have 100 women in trees during the group climb, which will take place behind the main building.

“Historically these industries have been male dominated – we want to change that,” said Katrina van Osch-Saxon, faculty member with Fleming’s Urban Forestry programs. “By having a day where women can come together and share experiences and stories about their careers – we hope we can encourage other ladies to join us.”

Representatives from both the International Society of Arboriculture and Forests Ontario will be attending the event, Katrina added.

“I wanted to get girls interested in forestry careers while having a great time,” she said of the Women in Trees event. “I hope to encourage girls and women to look into an amazing career working with trees.”

The event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the campus, 200 Albert St. S. in Lindsay, Ont.
