Haliburton ON – (September 12, 2014) – Fleming College’s Sustainable Building Design and Construction program will be part of a free province-wide doors open event next month.

The Sustainable Building program, located at the Haliburton Campus, is partnering with Haliburton Solar and Wind and Abbey Gardens Community Trust to co-host Green Energy Doors Open at Abbey Gardens. In 2012, students in the program constructed a straw bale Food Hub and Community Kitchen at the site.

Green Energy Doors Open at Abbey Gardens will run from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4. It will showcase the sustainable and energy design features of Abbey Gardens as well as serve as a demonstration site for Haliburton Solar and Wind.

Abbey Gardens Community Trust is a charitable organization focused on remediating a decommissioned gravel pit into a sustainable centre for innovation. Abbey Gardens includes a two-acre market garden with plans to further expand as an education and demonstration site. Visit www.abbeygardens.ca for more information. It is located at 1012 Garden Gate Drive off Highway 118, just outside of Haliburton.

Green Energy Doors Open features individual, community and commercial sustainable energy projects throughout Ontario with the goal of educating visitors about green energy, at the same time as highlighting the success of sustainable energies. For more information, visit greenenergydoorsopen.ca.
