New Sustainable Waste Management program unique in Ontario

Published

City of Kawartha Lakes, ON (Nov. 10, 2016) – Fleming College’s School of Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences is launching a Sustainable Waste Management program, the only college program in Ontario that is focused on building advanced knowledge and skills in this sector.

Sustainable Waste Management is a two-semester graduate certificate program that will be delivered at Fleming’s Frost Campus in Lindsay, Ont. Through the program, students will learn to develop and implement waste management plans and strategies to reduce, reuse and repurpose waste. While the program focuses on solid waste management, it does include components that address hazardous waste management.

Incoming students are required to have an undergraduate degree or diploma in science, engineering, biology, ecology, environmental studies/sciences, GIS, or other related fields.

Course work will include projects with community partners. And students will gain further hands-on experience via 160 hours of field placement that will enable them to network with those in the industry and explore interests in the field.

Potential careers for graduates include working as a waste diversion specialist, waste management specialist/technician, recycling program coordinator, industrial waste reduction coordinator, waste reduction education program officer or a sustainability manager.

Fleming developed the program in response to a shift in waste management practices with a focus on waste as a resource. This includes the new Waste-Free Ontario Act, passed in 2016, which makes producers responsible for their waste management and diversion.

“We are excited to add this new program to our post-graduate certificate offerings at the School of Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences,” said Linda Skilton, Principal of Frost Campus and Dean of the School of Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences. “The need for this program has been identified by our industry partners and endorsed by professionals who are currently working in this field. We expect that this program will be in high demand and meet the needs of both current and future employers.”
