Leading Lean in the workplace: special training session at Fleming College

Published

Peterborough ON – (October 15, 2014) – Building on the success of the Lean White Belt training program, Fleming College is offering a new training session for leaders who may be considering implementing Lean in their workplaces.

Leading Lean is a one-day workshop that will take place on Friday, Nov. 21 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sutherland Campus. The session, led by Ron Bercaw, will include both theory and applied learning to explore and understand the concepts of Lean across a range of industries and sectors.

Bercaw is the president of Breakthrough Horizons Ltd., a management consulting company that specializes in improvement through the application of the Toyota Business System, more commonly known as Lean. He has consulted across sectors – commercial, public and healthcare – in both the United States and Canada.

“The opportunity for real change at your company is only realized when you develop a foundation for Lean that includes knowledgeable Lean champions who understand the tools, share their understanding with others, and can assist with Lean implementation initiatives,” says Deborah Clifford, Manager, Cobourg Campus.

Twenty-two individuals – Lean transformation champions – graduated from Fleming’s first cohort of the White Belt training program on Sept. 24. The White Belt level teaches key Lean topics and tools to help companies develop their own internal Lean capabilities. Graduates of the program are able to realize improvements for their organizations by applying Lean at the basic level.

Participants in the White Belt program take part in a series of full-day workshops, practice using the introductory tools, and build the skills necessary to complete small implementation projects. Many choose to then advance to the Green Belt level of certification which equips them to lead large change initiatives.
