Fleming College’s CAWT to receive over $990,000 for water research centre expansion

Lindsay, ON (July 25, 2018) – Fleming College’s Centre for Advancement of Water and Wastewater Technologies (CAWT) will receive $994,318 in funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) College-Industry Innovation Fund (CIIF) to expand the CAWT’s applied research infrastructure and equipment.

The Honorable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science, announced the CIIF funding awards today at Red River College in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The CAWT’s CIIF award will support a much-needed $2.5 million expansion of water-related research infrastructure and equipment.

“This infrastructure will immediately support and benefit dozens of innovative small and medium-sized Canadian companies,” said Dr. Brent Wootton, Fleming College Associate Vice-President, Business Development, Applied Research, Government and Partner Relations. “There has been a consistent level of research at the CAWT; however, the demand for partnerships and projects has increased, and due to space and equipment limitations we have had to delay starting many projects and have put others on waiting lists.”

The CAWT’s expansion will house high-end analytical instrumentation enabling sophisticated development and discovery work, and allow Fleming College researchers to evaluate new and innovative clean technologies that focus on water reclamation and advanced nutrient removal. Wastewater reclamation has the potential to play a critical role in integrated long-term solutions to water shortages.

Since 2005, the CAWT has provided research and development services to over 130 industry partners in the water and wastewater sector, mostly small and medium sized companies that lack resources to conduct their own research. As a result of working with the CAWT, these companies accelerate and advance their innovative products and technologies in the marketplace, promoting economic development and protection of the environment.
