Community Forum: Innovations in Aging Well

Published

Are you interested in the future and direction of long term care in our community?

You are invited to participate in a one-day forum, Innovations in Aging Well, on Monday, Apr. 4 at St. Joseph’s at Fleming, Brealey Drive in Peterborough.

The forum will focus on exploring best practices in building community and will offer opportunities to hear stories of success and new developments in building community-oriented residences for long-term care.

Join innovators who have long held a vision for changing long term care culture, including community support services and agencies, long term care residents, their families and long term care staff. You will leave with ideas on how you can make a difference.

The forum includes a presentation from keynote speaker Karl Samuelson, author of New Directions for Facility-Based Long Term Care and senior health policy analyst with the Canadian Healthcare Association.

Sessions that will be featured at the forum include: Dance Activity Classes for Older Adults, Gait and Fall Prevention, Helping Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Trans people in Long Term Care, and Optimizing Exercise Programs for People with Stroke.

The forum is hosted by St. Joseph’s at Fleming and Fleming College’s Institute for Healthy Aging. The fee is $25 and includes sessions, refreshment breaks, lunch and a link to speaker presentations. The day runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. To register, visit www.flemingcollege.ca or www.stjosephsatfleming.com or call 705-743-4744.

The Institute for Healthy Aging (IHA) is an innovative learning and applied research centre created through a partnership between Fleming College and St. Joseph’s at Fleming. Housed at St. Joseph’s at Fleming, the IHA is evolving as a centre for promoting learning and research about best practices in geriatric and long-term care, with the primary goal of enhancing the quality of life of our residents. Through Fleming College and Trent University student placements from a wide range of programs and the promotion of applied research in Long Term Care, we promote innovation and the transfer of knowledge from research to practice. We welcome the opportunity of today’s forum on Innovations in Aging Well to share awareness of healthy aging initiatives and best practices with our colleagues and the community.
