Learning Design & Support Team provides virtual support to faculty

Published

Connection, communication and community are so important, which is why Fleming’s Learning Design & Support Team are using their virtual chatrooms to support faculty during the COVID-19 outbreak. This support, in turn, helps faculty provide a stronger online learning experience for students.

“The team effort is amazing. It’s meta teamwork – teams working with other teams – and it’s impressive,” said Digital Learning Advisor Terry Greene from his Webex chatroom.

In the chatroom, faculty drop in-and-out throughout the day to ask questions, share feedback, get resources, collaborate and more. The Digital Learning Team leads the chat, answering questions, sharing resources and providing support for learning plans.

“This cuts through all of the information, because there is too much information and so many people trying to help,” said Terry. “The resource that faculty need is a real live person to answer questions, provide the specific resource you need, and support you with your learning plan.”

More than one hundred faculty members have used the chatroom, dedicated to supporting their students. He said many have expressed gratitude towards students for their understanding and compassion while they navigate this new learning experience together.

“Everyone is patient, kind, compassionate, flexible and are helping each other,” said Terry. “We’ve had faculty come in the chat and ask questions before their first class and return to let us know that they’re happy with how it went.”

Overall, Terry said he is hearing positive feedback from faculty on their online teaching experience.

Thank you to the Learning Design & Support Team for providing this incredible resource to faculty. And thank you to Fleming faculty for transitioning most academic programs to maintain the teaching and learning capacity of Fleming College.
