Thomas Hughes Memorial Bursary

Estimated Value: $500.00
1 available in the Winter semester

This bursary has been established by the family of Thomas Hughes (1969-2022) to honour his life and commitment to teaching.

Thomas Hughes was an instructor at Sir Sandford Fleming College from 2014 until he passed away in 2022.  He was a lifelong learner and teacher; he prided himself on the relationships he made with others. Throughout his life, Thomas embraced his role as a teacher.  He found many different ways to connect with others in learning: first as a guitar instructor and then more formally as an instructor in post-secondary.  Throughout this time, Thomas also shared joy in learning with others about everything from electronics to the best steaks, from pinball and arcade machines to incredible 3D printing.  Thomas was very proud of his relationships with his students.  He often told stories of conversations, jokes and successes his students had as they worked in labs solving problems.

Thomas empathized with the challenges international students face in learning.  He knew deeply that to learn both a new culture and new content is to work tirelessly with heart and mind.  He would be pleased to know that his family is honoring this perspective by creating a scholarship to support international students in need.

This bursary will be awarded to an international student enrolled in the second year of the Wireless Information Networking program.  Student must demonstrate financial need.
