Faculty: Mark Trealout

Mark Trealout, a trained chef and Fleming College graduate, is the manager along with his partner Laura Boyd, of Grassroot Organics, a small family run mixed farm practicing sustainable agriculture in the western Kawartha Lakes area.

They currently manage about 15 acres of the 98 acre farm, focusing on heritage breed poultry and market gardening (with an emphasis on greens, beans and the allium family). They also do a fair bit of wild harvested edibles - fiddleheads, dandelions, cat tails, purslane, high-bush cranberry, sorrel, and more. Their goods are predominantly marketed in Toronto to fine dining restaurants, select retail shops and at the Brickworks farmers' market. They also manage a very small, local CSA program.
