Faculty: Leon Martin
Leon Martin's interest in Bonsai started in 1965 when he was a graduate student at the University of the Ryukus in Okinawa, Japan. In 1972, while heading an exchange program with Canadian students at Kansai University of Foreign Studies, he had the good fortune to meet a Kansai student with considerable experience growing Japanese Black Pines on his family farm in Takamatsu, Japan. It sparked a lifelong interest in growing a wide range of trees, as well as friendships and travels to various countries. A secondary school science teacher in Quebec, Ontario, Nunavut and the Northwest Territories for 32 years, Leon now teaches Bonsai at Mohawk and Niagara Colleges, while also participating in local Bonsai Societies. He also owns his own Bonsai business and grows some 200 bonsai in his home near Niagara-on-the-Lake.
