Faculty: Gavin Dandy
Gavin is the Farm Director and Co-founder of Everdale (www.everdale.org) where has worked full time as a farmer and educator since 1996.
As a farmer, Gavin has expereince in producing certified organic vegetables, mixed grain, hay, small-scale livestock, and seeds. He is familiar with a number of direct-marketing methods such as Community Shared Agriculture, farmers markets, retail and farm gate. He has designed and managed farm operations from half an acre in size up to 250 acres.
As an educator, Gavin has helped to develop Everdale, a non-profit charity. Everdale isn't owned by anyone. It's "owned by an idea". Everdale is a teaching farm that provides hands-on, solution-based food and farming education to build and engage healthy local communities.
Since 1996 Gavin has become increasingly focused on new farmer education. He is the coordinator of Everdale's on-farm internship program. This curriculum-based internship is the first of its kind in Ontario.
Gavin also has spearheaded the development of Everdale's Planner course, a mutli-week course that helps people to develop viable, ready-to-launch farm plans.
Aside from his work at Everdale, Gavin is also an instructor for the University of Guelph's Sustainable Urban Horticulture and Agriculture Certificate programs, is a freelance farm consultant, and sits as a board member on several provincial agriculture organizations.
