Horizontal Directional Drilling: Design to Construction

Monday, June 26, 2017 - Thursday, June 29, 2017 · 4-day (28 hours) field course

Course organized jointly through the Centre for Advancement of Trenchless Technologies (CATT) and Fleming College.

The course combines classroom study with field practice. Lectures will provide details on surface and subsurface investigations, drilling fluids, project planning, design, construction and QA/QC, while the field training component will include subsurface investigations, drill fluid testing, and installation of underground pipe using state-of-the-art HDD equipment.

During the 4-day course, participants will learn how to take into account the surface and subsurface information for project planning, design, drill fluids and tool selection, as well as how to operate the HDD equipment and monitor critical parameters (alignment, fluid pressures, pull loads) during pipe installation.

This joint course by the CATT and Fleming College combines both organizations' expertise, encompassing HDD design along with construction, and takes advantage of Fleming’s unique training program in drilling.

Blasting Techniques

This course is an introduction to using commercial explosives for rock blasting in the quarry and construction industries. The course includes skills for explosive product selection and blast pattern design according to field conditions and expected rock fragmentation. There is a strong emphasis on safe working practices and procedures for blasting in a surface mine and on construction projects.


Training participants will develop a basic understanding, of various drilling methods, their relationship to geology, and their applications in the field. This course has been developed for student to gain an understanding of the different applications and classifications of drill rigs and compatible components, to apply and demonstrate a working knowledge of different drilling systems and techniques as they relate to geology and the construction of wells and to comprehend the various factors affecting the safe, efficient operation of various drilling systems; and the integrity of well construction.


Environmental Sampling Principles

Training participants will develop an understanding of the maintenance and use of sediment, surface water and groundwater environmental sampling equipment. This course will teach the basic behaviours of various contaminant groups, how to distinguish between the basic properties of sediment, surface water and groundwater media and understand how these properties impact environmental sampling. Student will gain an understanding of standard environmental sampling collection procedures including the proper use and maintenance of appropriate sampling equipment and proper laboratory sample submission and chain of custody procedures.


Rock Sampling Using Diamond Core Drilling

The objective of this course is to instruct participants in core drilling as applied to any one of the drilling industries and will introduce the participant to diamond drilling equipment and to provide an opportunity to acquire the basic skills required to core. Topics will include how to determine the necessary equipment and supplies required for diamond core drilling, the operation, servicing, preventive maintenance, and repair of core drilling equipment and how to use standard wire-line sampling and testing procedures to obtain and record accurate information. Techniques to maximize footage, core recovery, and bit performance will be covered, as well as how to recognize and react to unsafe working conditions, habits, and potential hazards in the work environment according to applicable codes, best practices, and regulations.
