Picture Framing

Course Code: ARTS0170

Complementary, effective, framing is critical to both the appearance and preservation of artwork and treasures. This course will increase your awareness of what constitutes good framing as you explore numerous topics including: types of mat boards, the elements of design, colour tones, and how to be creative in matching mats and frames to a piece of art. Instruction and discussions will include the latest in framing techniques and materials available as well as how to mount prints like a professional. Specifically, you will learn how to cut both single and double mats, plus V- grooves and other specialty cuts. Ample opportunity will be provided to practice your skills with quality mat cutters. Whether your interest is in framing original art, prints, photographs or making shadow boxes, you will be able to apply what you have learned to complete two framed works. Teaching methodology will include numerous demonstrations, critiques and individual attention. It is important to note that you will not be cutting moulding and constructing frames but applying skills learned to pre-constructed standard-sized frames. There will be a varied selection to choose from ranging in size from 8x10, 9x12 and 11x14. All levels of expertise will benefit from this course as instruction will introduce the basics of framing and will also challenge the experienced framer to further develop skills.
