This course is not suitable for beginners.
Focus on building a process for interpretation and execution of successful paintings. Explore composition concepts that move away from drawing and focus on blocks of value and shape, from which to build an effective structure that will be a platform for the landscape, with and without architectural elements. Instruction will emphasize warm and cool colour relationships between the shape block in relation to a light source; colour relationships and broken colour application to strengthen composition and emotional content; and sections of paint as planes of light and shadow that, together, explain the nature of the subject matter. With guidance and constructive critique, build a composition from your own reference material in three stages; one 8X10 monochrome value study, one 8X10 colour study, and one 18X24 complete painting. These exercises will culminate in a larger canvas depicting your reference material and composition that reflects skills learned.
