How do pieces of trees create a box that can stir emotion?
Why does the grain of a soundboard always go in a particular direction?
Why do guitar makers use so many politically incorrect materials?
Why is a Soundhole a misnomer?
In this entertaining, 3-part lecture/slideshow/concert, award-winning guitar maker, inlay artist, and performer, Grit Laskin, will answer these questions and more.
He guarantees that by the end of the first portion, you will have a surprising new understanding of how an instrument maker pulls music, not just sound, out of a wooden box. Stradivari guitars, disappearing wood species, and how a sound wave travels are just some of the other topics explored in this anecdote-filled presentation.
With the help of more than 100 images, Grit next takes you on a visual journey into his world of engraved inlay and shows how he has, in the eyes of many, been largely responsible for pushing the inlay medium from a decorative tradition into an art form.
To cap this unique experience, Grit will perform a short concert of songs and instrumentals, using four different handmade instruments - one of his guitars and a tenor mandolin, plus the Concertina and the Northumbrian Smallpipes (bagpipes from the north of England).
