Folk & Appalachian Old Time Music - Banjo & String Bass

Course Code: ARTS2635

Old-time is the pre-bluegrass folk music of the Appalachian Mountains. This comprehensive course will focus on old-time clawhammer banjo and string-bass playing for the beginner and intermediate player. Offering an integrated and comprehensive course in song accompaniment for banjo, melodic playing, bass lines for folk songs, tunes and arranging, the course will culminate in a fun and lively pairing with Luke Mercier's fiddle and guitar course. This will be an exciting supplement that will provide a great space for group learning of old-time music! As a musician you will have the opportunity to collaborate and explore the concept of the "string-band"; the banjo players will learn about the role of the bass player by sharing the instruments of their counterparts in an integrated, friendly and all-inclusive setting for all skill levels. In addition you, will learn jaw-harp tune accompaniment, hambone body-percussion, blues songs and West-African stringed instruments which will be integrated with Luke Mercier's course.
