Dry Stone Structures

Course Code: ARTS2056

Learn to design and build dry-laid structures that are both functional and beautiful. Instruction will address the proper use of various masonry tools, the basics of structural masonry without mortar, and reference design features with SketchUp. The group will collaborate to build a dry stone feature collectively. There will be a strong emphasis on using local stone and designing projects according to the material at hand. No human-made materials such as manufactured stone or gabion cages will be utilized. Discussions and references will also include dry stone walling and various other manifestations of dry-laid work including ovens, fireplaces, fire pits, gates, cairns, benches, bridges and arches.
