To fight forest fires safely and effectively, avoid injuries and recover rapidly, initial attack forest fire fighters must have suitable levels of aerobic fitness, muscular strength and muscular endurance. WFX-FIT is a fitness standard for the exchange of Type 1 firefighters across Canada.It includes performing a continuous circuit that involves carrying a medium pump on the back for 160 m while traversing a 35 degree ramp every 20 m, carrying a medium pump in hands 80 m without traversing the ramp, picking up and carrying an Ontario hose pack (containing 4 lengths of hose) on the back for 1 km while traversing the ramp every 20 m, then dragging a weighted sled 80 m on level ground to simulate advancing charged hose. NOTE: WFX-FIT is required for anyone wishing to gain employment as front-line initial attack fire fighter.
