Hydronic Systems Design Certificate
Hydronic System Designers design heating and cooling systems, and typically work for large mechanical contractors or wholesalers. This certificate of qualification prepares you to fill current employment gaps in companies who construct, design, audit and manage hydronic systems.
Hydronics is a system of heating or cooling that involves the transfer of heat or cold by circulating a fluid or vapor in a closed system of pipes. This program is delivered in a hybrid format, combining online learning with hands-on training. Achievement of this certificate would allow those already working in the fields of Plumbing, HVAC, Water and Wastewater Operators to upgrade their skills for enhanced employability. It includes content such as alternative heat sources, residential mechanical ventilation systems, geothermal technology, blueprint reading, heat transfer units and boiler and piping design. Successful graduates will also be prepared for voluntary certification by the Canadian Hydronic Council as a Hydronic Systems Designer. This program is delivered in partnership with NAIT-The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology.
This program is open to residents of Ontario. Participants must possess one of the following:
- Certificate of Qualification in Plumbing, or Steam Fitting
- A certificate in Plumbing, or Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning from a recognized post-secondary institution
- Waste Water Operator certification
- Water Operator certification
- Well technician certification
Certificates must be completed within five years. Once you have completed all certificate requirements, please contact us again for your official certification.

Hydronic Systems Design
Hydronic Designer Core I (CNST214)
Gain an understanding of the core elements of hydronics design. You will learn how to interpret heat terminology, and apply the fundamentals of heating /air conditioning and their related systems. Gain an understanding of how to read and create blueprints and identify basic construction methods relevant to heating applications for residential, insulated concrete form, light building and agricultural applications.

Hydronic Designer Lab I (CNST215)
This lab will give participants practical applications of all the components attached to Hydronic Designer Core I, including creating blue prints for basic air conditioning/heating systems.

Hydronic Designer Core II (CNST216)
Building on the core elements of Hydronic Designer Core I gain a deeper knowledge of systems and installation practices. We will focus on the definition, selection and trouble-shooting of pumps for hydronic applications. Piping arrangements and procedures with the appropriate accessories and materials for different installations will also be covered.
Hydronic Designer Lab II (CNST217)
This lab allows participants to practice the elements of Hydronic Designer Core II, with an emphasis on systems and design practices in piping installations and pump system installations.
Hydronic Designer Core III (CNST218)
This course builds upon the theory taught in Hydronic Designer Core I and II with an emphasis on ventilation systems, systems start-up and alternative energy. Gain the skills to identify the code requirements and develop documentation for commissioning a Hydronic Heating system including estimating processes and preparation of a hydronic heating system estimate. You will also learn to identify control wiring components and state best practices for wiring of hydronic heating systems controls. We will address alternative heat-source technology, and their design components.
Hydronic Designer Lab III (CNST219)
This lab builds upon the practice of the elements taught in Hydronic Designer Lab I and II with an emphasis on ventilation systems, start-up and alternative energy. You will have the opportunity to practise of all the components attached to Hydronic Designer Core III.
