Advanced Power Engineering Technology Certificate (2nd Class)
The Advanced Power Engineering program provides 3rd Class Operating Engineers with the knowledge and skills necessary to challenge their 2nd Class operating (stationary) engineering exams.* The 2nd Class level curriculum is considered significantly more challenging than the 4th and 3rd Class levels with 32% of 2nd Class examinations in Ontario resulting in failure (Technical Safety Standards Authority, 2016).
In Ontario, there are a large number of employers who require 2nd Class Power Engineers due to the size of the power equipment that they operate. The average age of an Ontario 2nd Class Power Engineer is 57, and there is an urgent need for new 2nd Class Power Engineers to replace this retiring workforce (Technical Safety Standards Authority, 2016).
The Advanced Power Engineering program is unique in Ontario. It is comprised of six instructor-led online courses, each covering the material necessary to prepare for one of the TSSA 2nd Class exams. The courses are aligned with the PanGlobal Power Engineering 2nd Class textbooks and are designed so that 3rd Class Operating Engineers can complete the weekly readings and assignments around their work schedule.
This program provides both theoretical and practical education in advanced power plant systems and operations with an emphasis on safety and environmental best practices. There is a focus on supervisory and management of power plant systems and personnel, which is often required at the 2nd Class level.
Courses are offered on a rotating basis. Students who complete all six courses can apply to graduate with an Ontario Graduate Certificate in Advanced Power Engineering.
* Please Note: In Ontario the official title is Operating (Stationary) Engineer. There is a movement initiated by the Technical Safety Standards Authority (TSSA) to change the title to Power Engineer to align with the other provinces.
Diploma, Degree or Equivalent Experience
As per industry certifications regulations, candidates MUST possess a valid Canadian 3rd Class Operating (Power) Engineering Certificate of Qualification to be admitted to the program. A scanned copy of your certificate must be submitted to:

Students are encouraged to declare their program of choice with the Registrar's Office when registering for their first course. Students must declare their program of choice by the time they complete the third course in any one program. Applications for this program are not accepted through ontariocolleges.ca.
There are approximately 10,000 Power Engineers working in Ontario and of which less than 30% are 2nd Class Engineers.

Advanced Power Engineering
Plant Administration and Applied Mechanics (MECH316)
This course utilizes the virtual classroom and resulting interactivity to prepare candidates to challenge the 2nd Class Power Engineering exam 2A1. Topics of study involve calculations of ASME vessel component thicknesses, reinforcement compensation of openings, firetube boiler components and stays. Applied Mechanics calculations are also covered in areas of statics and dynamics. Students must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the Act and Regulations, and apply the knowledge to management principles for a typical plant including maintenance and safety administration. Student must be a registered 3rd Class Engineer with an active registration number.
Advanced Thermodynamics and Material Science (MECH317)
This course utilizes the virtual classroom and resulting interactivity to prepare candidates to challenge the 2nd Class Power Engineering exam 2A2. Topics of study include calculations of thermal expansion in solids, liquids and gases. Gas laws and problems involving expansion or compression of gases are covered in detail. Thermodynamics of steam including entropy lead into calculations of steam cycles in a power plant setting. Heat engine cycles for various types of engines are detailed. Candidates will demonstrate a thorough understanding of material properties, composition, treatments and uses. Corrosion principles and control methods are covered. Mechanical testing of materials for both destructive and NDE methods are detailed. Student must be a registered 3rd Class Engineer with an active registration number.
Advanced Boiler Systems and Pumps (MECH318)
Topics of study include an advanced study of steam generator design, applications, installation, and components. Advanced operations including water treatment and maintenance procedures are emphasized. A more detailed investigation of pumps included theory, and control methodology is also covered. This course will utilize the college advanced pump and boiler simulation models through an online operating interface to reinforce the advance operations component. Student must be a registered 3rd Class Engineer with an active registration number.
Heat Engines, Piping and Plant Documentation (MECH319)
Students are introduced to the theoretical principles, mechanical details, maintenance, lubrication and operation of various heat cycle engines including steam turbines, internal combustion engines, and gas turbines. A high level study of piping installations including code requirements is included. Students learn to interpret and comprehend the various types of plant drawings encountered including orthographic, P&ID's and flow diagrams, and other related documentation. The student must be a 3rd Class Engineer with an active registration number.
Power Plant Systems, Combustion and Environment (MECH320)
A complete overview of complex power plant systems is a major topic of study. Students utilize our advanced online simulator interface to develop advanced level skills on the college's power plant simulation. A detailed look at plant instrumentation and control systems is studied and reinforced through the simulation work. Detailed theory and controls of combustion systems for steam plants is included, with emphasis on environmental protection systems and operations requirement from air, water, and solids perspectives. The student must be a 3rd Class Engineer with an active registration number.
Electro-Technology, Compression and Refrigeration (MECH321)
The course includes a more advanced study of the theory of operation of electrical machines, and electrical distribution systems; leading into a detailed look at the construction and characteristics of AC and DC motors, generators, and other electrical equipment. The other major areas of study are principles, equipment and auxiliary systems with respect to gas compression systems and large scale refrigeration plants. Safety and code requirements are emphasized. This course utilizes the college advanced compressor and refrigeration simulation models through an online operating interface to reinforce operation and troubleshooting of these systems. The student must be a 3rd Class Engineer with an active registration number.
