For Off-campus housing, the three basic options are:
Room and Board
$125 - $150 per person per week
This type of accommodation is preferred by students who do not wish to prepare their own meals. Students are expected to comply to house rules and should have a clear understanding as to what these are before joining into a rental agreement. You should also discuss with the landlord whether 2 or 3 meals would be provided daily, and for 5 or 7 days per week. Be sure to find out ahead of time whether you have to pay rent over break periods. This is entirely up to the landlord, but should be decided beforehand.
The Residential Tenancies Act now applies to room and board accommodation where the roomer does not share kitchen or washroom facilities with the landlord. Therefore, if you have any doubts about the rental agreement, get it in writing and have it signed by both parties in order to provide legal protection for you and the landlord.
Room In A Private Home
A room in a private home where the tenant has use of the owner's kitchen/bathroom facilities, is not covered under the Tenant Protection Act.
$90 - $125 per person per week
A room in a private home is the most economical way to live. The accommodation may consist of separate facilities or use of the landlord's cooking facilities. Landlords will expect you to comply to house rules, and be sure to ask about these before you make any decisions. Do not take anything for granted.
Have a clear understanding with the home owner about break periods. In some cases there is no charge made for the break; however, this is entirely up to the landlord.
House, Apartment or Cottage
$90 - $125 per person per week
The cost is based on 3 or 4 students sharing an apartment or house. Cottages in the Lindsay area are approximately 15 - 20 kms from the campus.
