In this course, students will learn the basics of finance such as ledgers and balancing accounting books using basic mathematics. Students will organize, manipulate and graph numeric data. Topics include the use of formulas and functions, using templates and recording macros. Students will learn to perform basic tasks such as formatting work sheets, creating and modifying charts and working with lists.
- Business Essentials - A Survival Course ORGB0003

This course will explore the nature of business and the role of the individual within the business context. The course will help to prepare the student for the world of business by developing an understanding of the major functional aspects of a successful business. The course will also focus on a number of important business trends that will continue to affect business into the future. These include the growth and influence of international business, the role of ethics and social responsibility in business decisions, the significance of small business, the growth of the service sector, and the influence of technology on business activities.
- College Communications for Business and Hospitality Professionals COMM0078

This first semester course will introduce students to the essential communication skills required to be successful in their chosen post-secondary program. These skills include reading, writing, speaking, listening and critical thinking. Through a series of written assignments, in-class discussions based on readings, and lab activities, students will improve their overall communication skills. Students of COMM78 will engage in a series of activities and assignments designed to provide the essential language skills required for academic success.
- Mathematics Fundamentals MATH0096

This course is designed to provide students with the opportunity to master the skills of basic mathematics. The topics covered will include calculator skills and the fundamental operations of mathematics with whole numbers, fractions, ratio and proportion, and percent. Students will use mathematics to solve a variety of applied problems.
- Professional Office Administration Procedures I BUSN0109

This course is designed to introduce students to skills fundamental to the pursuit of a successful career in the field of office administration. Specific skills covered include time management, communications, customer service skills and reception. Professionalism, ethics, and proper communication skills in the office environment will be reinforced as part of a successful business environment. Students will be introduced to various functions of Microsoft Office software to produce a variety of office documents. During this course, students will start their professional portfolio to demonstrate their skills and abilities for future employment and educational opportunities.
- Word Processing I COMP0377

This course will give students the opportunity to use initiative and judgment to produce professional documents of a simple nature using Word. Topics covered include: creating, printing and editing documents including formatting, tables and charts. Students, using proper keyboarding technique, will achieve a minimum speed of 30 net words per minute. Grammar, spelling and writing style will be emphasized.
Semester 2
- Advanced Spreadsheets and Databases COMP0413
Units/ Hours: 45
Students learn to use the advanced features of the spreadsheet program Excel to create business lists, forms and charts. Various Excel tools for analysis of spreadsheet data will also be used. Students learn to use advanced features of the database program Access to create and manage a database, produce reports and create charts.
- Computerized Bookkeeping ACCT0070
Units/ Hours: 30
Students will be able to keep a complete set of books using a small business accounting software package. The adjusting and closing entries and financial statements will be completed at the end of the accounting cycle. Cash control procedures will be undertaken and selected transactions recorded in a journal.

This course builds upon the skills and knowledge gained in the first course on office administration procedures. Students learn how to prepare for meetings, arrange travel, perform scheduling, manage contacts and record meeting minutes. Business etiquette and customer service is also discussed. Students will also learn about the various professional associations and accreditations available to them. Students will continue to learn about professional portfolios and continue to add to their professional portfolio.
- Transcription Basics BUSN0111
Units/ Hours: 30
Using transcription equipment and word processing software, students will learn how to produce general business-related documents. Emphasis will be placed on the student's ability to produce mailable documents within specific timelines that are accurate with regard to spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitalization, numbers, and abbreviations.

The more advanced functions available in MS Word will be studied for the production of more complex documents. Topics covered include: Managing multiple documents, macros, forms and advanced formatting. Students will utilize various keyboarding techniques to improve their keyboarding speed, accuracy, and proofreading skills to achieve a minimum speed of 40 net words per minute. Grammar, spelling and writing style will be emphasized.

Work placement is a non-paid experience that provides an opportunity for students to integrate theory and practice in a business work environment. The work placement experience enables students to explore their chosen field and assess and apply individual knowledge, skill and aptitude in a professional environment.

Semester 3
- Advanced Bookkeeping ACCT0073
Units/ Hours: 45
This course builds on the knowledge obtained in ACCT70 and introduces the more advanced features of a small business accounting software package. Students will utilize the credit card, budgeting, project, security, and inventory components of the software. Students will prepare bank and credit card account reconciliations. Foreign currency transactions will be processed and recorded. Advanced software features will be used to produce payroll and sales tax reports and remittances. Students will prepare special and customized reports and will export information to Excel. The e-mail features of the software will be used to send invoices, statements and reports.

This course emphasizes the requirement for excellent communication skills by office professionals. Students will work on correct grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure to produce professional documents. Oral communication skills and nonverbal communication such as mannerisms and behaviours will be covered to teach and promote professional behaviours and conduct.
- Desktop Publishing and Presentations COMP0414
Units/ Hours: 45
This course prepares students to produce professional promotional materials, including business cards, flyers, newsletters, and brochures using Microsoft Word. This course also gives students an introduction to Microsoft Publisher.

This course will involve the integration of word processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation software to share, embed, and link data between applications. Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint) will be used for teaching and testing.
- Information and Records Management BUSN0120
Units/ Hours: 45
Students will learn the terminology, concepts and procedures associated with office records management. The management of both paper and electronic records will be explored. The student will learn and work with the basic legal requirements (such as Privacy Act and Freedom of Information Act) for the release and safekeeping of information and the laws and regulations regarding the management of such records.
- Work Placement Preparation and Job Search Skills FLPL0129

This course is designed to prepare the student to undertake a productive job search in the current job market and to prepare for placement. Students will prepare a resume and cover letter showcasing their job objective, skills summary (including soft and hard skills), education, work experience and interests. They will also complete their final portfolios. Several job search skills will be highlighted including the importance of networking.

Semester 4
- Executive Office Simulation BUSN0122

Students complete a wide range of tasks and responsibilities that simulate a variety of office situations. Activities include preparing documents, managing schedules and calendars, arranging meetings, performing financial activities, processing mail/email, and answering phone calls. To simulate a real-world environment, students will be "interrupted" and be required to respond to conflicts, demands, and issues that may occur in an office environment.
- Human Resources Administration MGMT0007

This course is designed to provide an overview of key human resources activities and the related legislation affecting today's workplaces. Topics of study include the strategic role of HRM, legal compliance and valuing diversity, designing and analyzing jobs, human resources planning, recruitment, selection, orientation and training, performance appraisal, compensation, employee benefits & services, labour relations, and occupational health & safety. Participants will also have an opportunity to discuss legal compliance in the areas of human rights, pay/employment equity, employment standards, labour relations, and health & safety. Applied learning opportunities include case study analyses, identification of Human Rights Code violations on an employment application form, development of a job description/specification and a recruitment ad, critique of managerial performance on videotape, web-based research pertaining to employment practices, and completion of a journal article summary and explanation of its relationship to the course material. Note: This course has been approved by the Human Resources Professionals Association (HRPA) as a credit in the Canadian Council of Human Resources Associations' (CCHRA's) national certification program. To qualify to write the National Knowledge Exam, it is necessary to attain an overall average of 70 percent in the nine subjects covered, with no grade of less than 65 percent. Prior to enrollment in this course, it is recommended that learners have attained the learning outcomes of Communications for Business (COMM78).

In this second course on computer applications, students will continue to expand their knowledge and skills on Internet research. Topics include search engines, developing search strategies, ethics and copyright. Students will create, edit and maintain simple web pages using an HTML text editor. Students will explore other HTML editing tools.
