Semester 1

  • College Math Foundations I MATH0115

    Units/ Hours: 60

    College Math Foundations I is a foundational mathematics course specifically designed for students of the General Arts and Science Certificate program. This course is designed to provide students with the opportunity to master the skills of basic mathematics. The topics covered will include, calculator skills, the fundamental operations of mathematics with whole numbers, fractions, ratio and proportion, percent, area and volume, reading charts and graphs and basic statistics.

  • Computer Applications COMP0496

    Units/ Hours: 45

    Students will be introduced to basic computer applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, to develop basic skills to create documents, navigate the Internet to conduct research, and communicate in educational and workplace settings. Student work in this course will be integrated with assignments from other General Arts and Sciences courses.

  • Creative Media COMM0172

    Units/ Hours: 45

    Students will be introduced to an overview of different ways to express oneself through a range of media such as writing, movies, digital imagery, drama and oral presentations.

  • Introduction to Social Sciences SOCI0182

    Units/ Hours: 60

    Students will be introduced to an overview of various disciplines in the social sciences (e.g., psychology, sociology, anthropology, and history) with an emphasis on thinking critically about historical and current contributions of these disciplines as they may relate to self and society. Students will also prepare for their Service Learning Project which will be completed in semester two.

  • Preparatory College Communications COMM0170

    Units/ Hours: 75

    Students will be introduced to basic communication skills such as reading, writing, speaking, listening and critical thinking. Through a series of written assignments, in-class discussions based on readings, and lab activities, students will improve their overall communication skills. Students will work through the stages of the writing process to eventually write a personal essay.

Semester 2

  • Career Awareness and Preparation COMM0173

    Units/ Hours: 45

    Students will be engaged in a self-learning process that will include: advocacy, reflection, a service learning project, an exit plan, pathways to other opportunities and job application processes. Students will complete their Service Learning Project described in the Introduction to Social Sciences course in semester one.

  • College Communiations for College Transfer COMM0171

    Units/ Hours: 75

    This course will introduce students to the essential communication skills required to be successful in their post-secondary studies. These skills include reading, writing, speaking, listening and critical thinking. Through a series of written assignments, in-class discussions based on readings, and lab activities, students will improve their overall communication skills and will work through the stages of the research and writing process to eventually write a persuasive essay.

  • College Math Foundations II MATH0116

    Units/ Hours: 60

    College Math Foundations II is a foundational mathematics course specifically designed for students of the General Arts and Science Certificate program. This course is designed to provide students with continued opportunity to master the skills of basic mathematics. The topics covered will include algebraic fundamentals, an introduction to equations and formulae manipulation, and linear functions.

  • Introduction to Life Sciences SCIE0147

    Units/ Hours: 60

    Students will be introduced to the basics of biology, chemistry, scientific inquiry and ethics in science. Students may undertake chemical experiments that do not use harsh chemicals.

  • General Education Elective

    Course Number: GENED

    All graduates of diploma programs require general education credits. These courses allow you to explore issues of societal concern by looking at the history, theory and contemporary applications of those issues.

    Your program has designated some required general education courses. In addition, you have the opportunity to choose from a list of electives each semester.

    You may already possess general education equivalencies from other colleges or universities. Please see the General Education Co-ordinators at the Peterborough and Lindsay locations for possible exemptions.
