You and your tree: From the ground up

City of Kawartha Lakes ON – (April 14, 2015) – Students in Fleming College’s Urban Forestry Technician program are hosting a free conference for the community on Saturday, April 18 – You and your tree: From the ground up.

The students are reaching out to community members with the goal of creating a healthier urban forest – starting with one tree at a time, from the ground up.

The conference includes four workshops:

Tree pruning – learn proper pruning techniques

The Emerald Ash Borer – learn how to identify the signs and symptoms of when this insect is affecting your Ash tree

Tree protection – learn to protect your trees from being harmfully impacted by surrounding road or sidewalk construction

Compost tea – create a nutrient-packed fertilizer that not only helps your tree but also restores your soil, without the use of chemicals

The conference will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 18 in the Aboriculture and Law building (next to the windmill) at the Frost Campus in Lindsay, 200 Albert St. S.

There are 60 spots available. Individuals can register by contacting faculty member Katrina van Osch-Saxon at 705-324-9144 ext. 3274 or Katrina.van_osch-saxon@flemingcollege.ca. Participants can also register online. For more information, visit http://www.urbanforestryinitiative.weebly.com.
