Turning on the Lights: The Science Behind Sexual Violence & Harassment Statistics on campus and in the community

Peterborough ON – (May 21, 2015) – An upcoming presentation at Fleming College will explore sexual violence in a scientific and statistical context.

Turning on the Lights: The Science Behind Sexual Violence and Harassment Statistics on Campus and in the Community will take place at Fleming’s Sutherland Campus (599 Brealey Dr.) on Tuesday, May 26 from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

The event features a keynote presentation, Sexual Consent and Post-Secondary Students, from Terry Humphreys, PhD, Trent University.

The keynote will be followed by a panel presentation featuring Ian DeGeer (PhD candidate); Sonya Vellenga (Kawartha Sexual Assault Centre); Lynn Zimmer (YWCA of Peterborough/Haliburton); Det.-Sgt. Jane Conway (Peterborough County OPP); and Kristi Kerford (Fleming College).

The presentation – aimed at professionals working in the fields of violence prevention, education, and social and community services – has a goal of enhancing community collaboration through building an understanding among agencies of the collection, purpose, and use of data on sexual violence.

Fleming College recently released a stand-alone policy and protocol on sexual assault and sexual violence.

Building on existing policies and practices at the colleges, the stand-alone policy and protocol provides precise definitions of sexual assault and sexual violence, sets clear standards for reporting and responding to incidents of sexual violence, and establishes clear processes for complaints and investigations. The policy also includes measures to ensure that people who make complaints are protected from reprisals, retaliation or threats, and it includes provisions to ensure that confidentiality is strictly observed.
