Students to benefit from thousands raised at faculty art auction

Original Robert Bateman piece brings in the highest bid at annual event

Bateman2 resizeHaliburton, ON (August 16, 2016) – Students at Fleming College will benefit immensely from the thousands of dollars raised at the Haliburton School of Art + Design (HSAD) Faculty Art Auction.

The auction grossed more than $32,500 through the live and silent auction sale of art pieces created and donated by artists who are, or have been faculty members at HSAD.

“Funds from our annual art auction make a big difference to the students coming to our campus to study the arts. Many of our students have a financial need and through the generosity of our faculty, these students can access additional bursary funds. It often makes the difference on whether students can attend post-secondary education or not,” said Sandra Dupret, Dean of HSAD and Principal of the Haliburton Campus.

This year’s event featured a special item up for bidding – a demonstration painting by renowned artist Robert Bateman. Bateman created the painting during his three-day workshop at HSAD’s summer school. His work brought in $18,000 in live auction bidding.

“Mr. Bateman’s donation was an amazing addition to this year’s auction. His work is highly sought-after and collected, which certainly made a large impact on the overall funds raised. We are very thankful to him for the ‎contribution,” said Dupret.

The auction, held annually, took place Aug. 11 at the Haliburton Campus. About 150 people attended the event.

All net proceeds from the auction will support art students at the Haliburton Campus through the scholarship and bursary program at Fleming College.
