Scholarship recipients honoured

Surrounded by family and friends, recipients of Fleming College’s Academic Excellence Scholarships were recognized at a reception in Fulford’s Dining Room at the Sutherland Campus on Thursday, October 4.Established in 1998 by the college Board of Governors, the scholarship program recognizes outstanding academic achievement among students in the local school board districts as well as students who have excelled academically in specific disciplines. This year, 28 first-year students received $2,000 each toward one year of full-time study."The Fleming College Board of Governors congratulates you on your outstanding achievement and thanks you for choosing Fleming,” Board Chair Murray Rodd told the students. “The academic talent that our scholarship students bring to Fleming greatly enriches our college community.”About 100 guests attended the reception, including the students’ family, friends, and high school teachers and counsellors. Guests at the reception were treated to a host of culinary creations prepared and served by the college’s culinary students.Roberta Thompson, a graduate of Holy Trinity Secondary School in Courtice, is enrolled in the Motive Power Techniques program. She was surprised to learn she would receive a scholarship. “It was kind of a shock. I wasn’t expecting it,” she said. She chose the program after learning about it from her high school automotive teacher and then visiting the Centre for Heavy Equipment Technology at the Frost Campus. Ms. Thompson is, to date, the only female enrolled in the program set to start in January."It doesn’t bother me at all,” she said. “I’ve done co-operative courses where I’m the only female. It gives me more will to carry on – and show them up,” she added with a smile. For a complete list of the scholarship recipients visit: http://www.flemingc.on.ca/index.cfm/go/news/sub/view/ID/4 3/cfid/6346514/cftoken/30113295.cfm
