Royal Ontario Museum & Fleming College renew program partnership

Published

Peterborough ON – (November 24, 2014) – Building on the success of the existing partnership between the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) and Fleming College’s Environmental Visual Communication (EVC) program, the two institutions have signed an agreement to continue their relationship for another five years.

The ROM has hosted the EVC program since its inception three years ago. This setting allows students in the program to learn in a unique and enriching environment, with access to the ROM’s exceptional resources and depth of knowledge.

Janet Carding, Director and CEO of the ROM, and Fleming College President Tony Tilly signed the agreement at a special ceremony during the EVC Student Showcase on Saturday, Nov. 22.

“Having the opportunity to study at the ROM provides our students with an unparalleled classroom experience.

We are pleased to renew our partnership with the ROM in this regard,” said Fleming College President Tony Tilly. “The work that our students and graduates are doing in this field is important and much-needed, on both a local and global scale. We are grateful for the ROM’s recognition and support of this.”

Recent EVC graduate Joshua See is one example – he has been nominated for a Premier’s Award. The Premier’s Award recipients will be announced at a gala event at the Royal York on Monday, Nov. 24.

See was nominated for his use of photography and videography in helping organizations reach their education, conservation and communication goals. His photographs have been published in Royal Ontario Museum and Alternatives Journal magazines, and he has contributed significant video content to TVO’s documentary series Museum Diaries.

“Josh is an excellent example of the skills that EVC students gain as a result of their experience in this unique program,” said Linda Skilton, Dean/Principal of the School of Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences at Fleming College.

The Student Showcase, held annually at the ROM, celebrates the conclusion of the EVC program. This year’s Student Showcase included a display of curated communication works created by EVC students, located in the Earth Rangers Studio. About the Environmental Visual Communication program
Environmental Visual Communication is a graduate certificate program that runs from May to November each year. There is no other program like it in Canada. Students develop visual communication skills and strategies to inspire environmental awareness and advocacy. With a focus on strategic messaging and technical savvy, students learn to use photography, videography, multimedia and design principles to bridge environmental issues with thoughtful communication through a variety of media channels. Graduates will be well-equipped to identify strategies to inform and educate, garner engagement and support, and build and share campaigns to address conservation issues.
