Published

On Saturday, January 31 eight teams battled at the Ontario Speed Skating Oval (OSSO) for the Polar Cup – organized in part by Fleming College students in the Event Management program – as part of PolarFest weekend activities. The South Enders defeated Ashburnham Red Wings in a close final game 17 to 15.The day featured a total of fifteen games on three rinks on the OSSO front and back stretches.  Players and spectators enjoyed a barbecue organized by Fleming College culinary students and beer in the Publican House beer tent. This was the first time the event was organized and held at the Oval site in the tournament format.  Teams played on small pick up-sized rinks on the natural ice surface.  “We are pleased with the number of teams registered and ice conditions.  We had a solid event that we can build on for next year,” noted Heather Watson, Project Developer for OSSO. The event was organized in part by Fleming College Event Management students, which was a strategic partnership to allow students to develop valuable skills and knowledge while helping the OSSO project.  Students Kaila Arcand and Moniek Oudshoorn commented, “Working with the Oval on this project was a great experience.  We were able to immediately apply class lessons as we worked to plan the event.”Medals and prizes were awarded to the top three teams.  In first place, South Enders followed by Ashburhham Red Wings and Six Shooters. “Thanks to all the teams who participated and the spectators alike.  Sponsors like Sysco and Costco stepped up to help and it was a successful event overall” added Watson. We would also like to thank Wild Rock Outfitters, The Peterborough Petes, Life 100.3, Rona, Fleming College and all the volunteers for their great support."- 30 –
