NEWS RELEASE FROM NORTHUMBERLAND CFDC:

Northumberland, ON, November 13, 2013 – Northumberland Community Futures Development Corporation (Northumberland CFDC), in support of Fleming College’s Certificate in Manufacturing Operations, invites local manufacturers to immediately apply for training funds.

Fleming’s new certificate program was launched today at the Tri-Association Manufacturing Conference held in Belleville, Ontario.  This year’s conference theme of “Gaining the Edge by Unlocking Your Potential” was the ideal time for Fleming to unveil its leading edge training certificate.

The conference theme recognized that while successful manufacturers are in a continuous search for concepts and improvements that give them an edge on their competition, often the expertise already resides in-house. Fleming’s Certificate in Manufacturing Operations is uniquely designed to unlock that potential.

The certificate program covers manufacturing processes and includes statutory regulations, manufacturing operations, packaged products and inspection and quality in a manufacturing environment. It focuses on effective teamwork and an efficient workplace including training in root cause analysis, waste management, down time analysis and performance improvement.

The program also features the innovative Lean training, which emphasizes continuous improvement and creates solution-focused, problem-solving employees. Employees receive a college certificate upon satisfactory completion, upgrading their skills and marketability through the process.

Wendy Curtis, Executive Director of Northumberland CFDC said, “We have set aside an initial $50,000 from the Government of Canada’s Eastern Ontario Development Program (EODP) and are inviting immediate applications from employers for conclusion of training by next March. Our goal is to strengthen Fleming’s launch since we believe the certificate can add great value in staging Northumberland manufacturers in the global marketplace. It’s perfect in that it recognizes that powerful ideas on how to improve productivity are already here. The processes learned through this certificate program will simply unlock those ideas.”

Deborah Clifford, Manager of the Fleming Northumberland Campus confirmed, “The Northumberland CFDC has been instrumental in encouraging Fleming to first pilot the program last year at local manufacturer Weetabix and now extend the certificate program through the manufacturing sector. We’ve since been working with members of the Northumberland and Kawartha Manufacturers Associations to refine the program further and are thrilled to now be launching at this important Tri-Association Manufacturing Conference.”

Curtis concluded, “A primary purpose of the EODP is to build capacity, improve productivity and increase global competitiveness.  Fleming’s new certificate aligns with that goal.”
