Board of Governors approves new programs

Fleming College’s Board of Governors has approved two new programs – Manufacturing Operations and Retail Pharmacy Assistant.

Manufacturing Operations, launching in September 2014, is a certificate program for individuals employed in the community. It is aimed at advancing an employee’s abilities in areas such as continuous improvement and building effective teams. As well, the program will teach those working on the manufacturing floor how to better understand and apply principles of quality assurance and efficiency and study waste management, performance improvement, and downtime analysis. These skills bring value to the workforce and can assist local businesses in advancing employees from within. The curriculum will be delivered in intensive sessions – either on-site at the manufacturing facility or on-campus in evening and/or weekend time blocks. Instead of formal courses, the content will be offered as a series of “modules.”

Retail Pharmacy Assistant, scheduled to start in September 2015, is a one-year certificate program with a hybrid delivery model – a blend of online and face-to-face courses – that will provide professionals and other interested individuals with an opportunity to learn in a flexible format. The program aims to help meet challenges faced by the healthcare industry in recruiting and retaining qualified employees to work with pharmacists. Fleming also offers a Pharmacy Technician diploma program at the Sutherland Campus.

Governors also approved a modification for the Geomatics Technician program. As of September 2014, the program will be known by a new name – Resources Mapping Technician. The modification will also incorporate curriculum changes, a compressed format with more applied learning opportunities, and a co-op semester.
